In-Home Supportive Services: Receiving Care

Submit an Application
Participate in an In-Home Assessment

A social worker will visit with the applicant at their home. They may also consult with family, friends and health care practitioners. IHSS will then will determine how many hours and the types of services provided.

Finding a Care Provider

The care provider can be family or a friend or a prescreened provider from our registry. For help finding someone, contact the IHSS Public Authority at 805-654-3416. They can provide a list of potential providers for the client to interview.

This person will work directly for the client.  Make sure to ask about experience, observe their personality style and determine if they are a good match. The client or a family member will hire, train, supervise and, if needed, fire the provider.

Your Role as the Employer

As the employer, the client or a family member will hire, train, supervise and, if needed, fire the provider.

The employer assigns duties and hours, making sure they are within what has been approved by IHSS.

Make sure to keep the workplace safe. The care provider (employee) can ask for assistance or report a complaint with the IHSS Public Authority if they believe that their IHSS employer has behaved in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner.

Reporting Changes

Once enrolled in IHSS, there are events you will need to report to your social worker immediately so your benefits are not stopped.  Circumstances that must be reported right away include:

  • Any time spent away from home whether for hospitalization or vacation
  • Name change
  • Address and/or telephone number change
  • Needs or circumstances change
  • Household composition change (someone moves in or out of your home)
  • Any change to your Medi-Cal benefits

For more information on what changes to report, call your social worker or call 805-654-3260 (Ventura, Ojai, Camarillo, Oxnard area) or 805-306-7935 (Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley area).
