In Home Supportive Services: Hiring Your Care Provider

Matching Recipients with Providers

IHSS approval will include the number of hours and types of service you can receive. We will also let you know what, if any, share of cost you will pay. The next step is to hire a person to provide the approved services.

This person will work for you. They can be a family member or friend, or we can provide a list of approved providers for you to interview. Make sure to ask about experience, observe their personality style and determine if they are a good match for your needs. You or a family member will hire, train, supervise and, if needed, fire your provider.

For help finding a provider, or setting up the required background screenings, contact the IHSS Public Authority at 805- 654-3416. They can provide a list of pre-screened providers from their registry for you to interview.

Working Relationships

As the IHSS employer, you must keep the workplace safe. Your provider (employee) can ask for assistance or report a complaint with the IHSS Public Authority if they believe that their IHSS employer has behaved in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner.
